Managers Corner

Managers Corner -By Roger Bailey, Service Manager

Welcome to the first of Bala's website Service Manager's letters. I will attempt to update this letter at least quarterly. In this letter I will provide information pertaining to service events, operations, specials and pertinent tech tips. Additionally, other members of my staff will periodically provide articles of a more technical nature. Now is the time to think about getting your baby out of Winter storage. Hopefully, you took a look at your MOM (motorcycle owner's manual) when you put your bike up for Winter and did at least the basics. Stabil in the fuel, filled the tank, checked the tire pressure, changed the oil, plugged in the battery tender, washed, waxed, polished and covered it with a breathable cover. So, now it's Spring. Refer to your MOM again. The basics include:

1. Check that the clutch will disengage.

2. Pull the plug wires and roll the engine over a few times to scavenge any oil that may be in the crankcase.

3. Reconnect the plug wires and start the engine. Let the engine warm up and check oil and transmission levels.

4. Check that all controls, electrical equipment and switches are operating properly.

If you have any questions on what to check, give us a call. We will be glad to help you out. We are planning a seminar in the Fall to help you get ready for next Winter. So, watch for more info on this later this Summer. I hope to see you soon.

Warranty -vs- Maintenance...

What's The Difference?

war·ran·ty noun, plural -ties, verb, -tied, -ty·ing.

a written guarantee given to the purchaser of a new appliance, automobile or other item by the manufacturer or dealer, usually specifying that the manufacturer will make any repairs or replace defective parts free of charge for a stated period of time and under certain conditions.

main·te·nance –noun

care or upkeep as of machinery or property. The activity involved in maintaining somthing in good working order

All right, that's the dictionary.com definition of these to terms. So what do they mean to you as a proud Harley-Davidson owner?

Regular maintenance on Harley-Davidson Motorcycles are set in intervals outlined in the owners manual and the service manuals. Current models are set at 1000 miles, 5000, miles, 10,000 miles and so on. These services are suggested by the Motor Company to you can keep your bike in good running order. The fluids (engine oil, primary, transmission fluids) are changed during these times. Also the technician looks over the bike making sure that the belt tension is proper and the bolts are all set to specific torques. The purpose of these services to make sure your bike retains its perfection throughout the miles. It is also the owners responsibility to cover the cost of these procedures, the labor and parts. These services also can have an effect on warranty.

Warranty is provided by the Motor Company. New bikes have a two year manufacturers warranty with the option of purchasing and extended warranty. (I'll explain extended warranty at a later date.) There are also subcategories to warranty including: battery, tire, emissions, over the counter sales, but for now I'm focusing on the motorcycle types. The warranty is a Contract between you and the manufacturer. A copy of the warranty agreement should have been gone over at the time of purchase and a copy in your bike paperwork. A warranty issue applies to problems the bike has that are abnormal, like leaking gaskets, loose compensator nut, and wheel wobble. Warranty issues are usually covered by the Motor Company; they can, however, refuse to accept the claim if, they feel the motorcycle was improperly maintained, certain performance parts were installed on the bike (voiding the warranty), or the problem was caused by rider neglect or abuse.

I hope this helped define the differences between Warranty and Maintenance. I'll post a little more in depth on the different types of claims in future articles.
